Young children in kindergarten and first grade are often asked to draw pictures of themselves and their families. But one family drawing by a six-year-old boy caused his teacher to drop everything and call an emergency meeting with the boy’s parents. Now, the teacher’s reaction, as well as the boy’s drawing, are floating around the internet and are sparking a debate about whether or not the teacher was right to call an “emergency meeting” with the child’s parents after seeing the worrying drawing.

After he was subjected to the meeting with his son’s teacher, the boy’s father turned to Facebook to share his take on the entire ordeal.

“Our six-year-old handed us a note. His teacher had called my wife and me in for an emergency meeting. We asked our son if he had any idea why and he said, ‘She didn’t like the drawing I did.’ We went in the next day. His teacher pulled the drawing out and said, ‘I asked him to draw his family, and he drew this. Would you mind explaining?’”

“‘Not at all,” my wife said. “Family vacation. Snorkeling off the Bahamas.”

The teacher found the drawing the boy made disturbing because it looked like the child’s family had nooses around their necks. The teacher found this to be very alarming, so they decided to call the boy’s parents into the school for a meeting to get to the bottom of what the drawing was and why the boy had drawn such a shocking scene in the first place.

The next day when the boy’s parents showed up at school to talk to the child’s teacher, they were confronted with the shocking drawing. However, the parents did not think there was anything wrong with the drawing because it simply depicted the boy’s family on vacation when they went snorkeling in the waters off the coast of the Bahamas.

When the father shared the incident on social media, people quickly jumped into debate about whether or not the teacher overreacted or if they did the right thing by calling the boy’s parents in for a meeting to discuss the content of the child’s family drawing.

Some people called the teacher’s reaction “bloody hysteria,” while others felt it was unnecessary for the teacher to call an emergency meeting over a simple drawing of the child’s family.

However, there were a lot of people who supported the teacher’s actions. They felt that it is important for teachers to do what they can to keep the children in their classrooms safe, especially when things at home might not be the safest environment to be raising a child. The teacher thought the drawing showed the boy’s family with nooses around their necks, and she was concerned.

Teachers need to strike a balance between keeping the students in their classroom safe from all threats and minding the family’s business. While some felt the teacher overstepped their boundary, many others felt the teacher was right to call the meeting.
